Survey Success: Navigating Compliance and Resilience in Nursing Homes

Series Description

Building Resilience Against Common Survey Concerns – Hawley Hunt
This session walks learners through the survey process, from preparing ahead of survey, to educating staff on the survey process, to best practices during survey, and what to do post-survey. The session engages learners in a description of survey preparation as well as survey resources to use along the way.

Past Noncompliance: How to Build Your Case – Hawley Hunt
This session covers a variety of items to assist facilities in achieving past noncompliance (PNC). The session describes what is necessary to achieve PNC, identifies the process to follow if facilities self-identify an adverse event, discusses reasons why PNC is not achieved, and explains how to advocate for PNC during your survey.

Navigating Abuse Investigations in Nursing Homes with Confidence – Hawley Hunt
Navigating abuse investigations may be daunting, even for the most experienced skilled nursing administrator. However, they do not have to be. Through this session, learners will game an understanding of abuse regulations, what to report, where to report, and how to complete a thorough investigation. The session will provide a detailed account, with a step-by-step explanation for how to complete an investigation.

Playing Offense, Not Defense – Submission of Self Report Information – Kayla Scheuers
This session covers Iowa-specific requirements regarding what must be submitted to the Iowa Department of Inspection, Appeals and Licensing related to reportable events.  It covers how to turn a completed investigation into a concise, thorough 5-day summary that showcases the facilities ability to perform a thorough investigation, conduct a root cause analysis and develop appropriate interventions.

Speaker Bios

Hawley Hunt, MBA, MHA, LNHA is the Director of Regulatory and Quality Services for AHCA. Prior to joining AHCA, she was an Administrator for many years in a skilled nursing facility in Raleigh, North Carolina. Hawley has a Bachelor’s degree in Health Services Management, and a dual Master’s in Health Care Administration and Business Administration from Pfeiffer University. Hawley has a passion for long-term care, especially quality improvement and caring for residents with dementia diagnoses.

Kayla Scheuers has 15+ years of experience in eldercare, including community services, elder protective services, and long-term care. She is a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator and QAPI Certified from the American Association of Post-Acute Care Nursing (AAPACN). She attended the University of Iowa and received a Bachelors in Social Work and Washington University where she received a Masters in Social Work with a specialization in Gerontology.
