A.L. Medication Managers Course

Course Description

As of March 1, 2021, ALL unlicensed personnel passing medication in assisted living programs will be required to have successfully completed a medication aide or medication manager course approved by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA) prior to administering medications in the assisted living setting.

In April 2020, the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals released revised Chapter 67 rules requiring non-licensed personnel administering medications in an assisted living program or residential care facility via nurse delegation, to have completed a department approved medication manager course. ICAL’s hybrid on-line Medication Manager’s course, approved by DIA, provides individuals the necessary tools to effectively and safely administer many medications encountered in AL and RCF programs. Topics covered in the course include introduction to pharmacy, review of body systems, medications used to treat common conditions found in the aged, as well as medication administration and documentation and other necessary skills.

PLEASE NOTE: Students must be logged in under their own username/profile to receive credit for the course. Accessing the course through a manager’s/administrator’s profile may result in the student having to retake the course for course credit to be applied to the student.

The 16-hour course includes:

  • 10 hours of online training
  • 6 clinical practicum hours
  • a final exam

The 10-hour online portion of the course will be available on-demand. A six-hour clinical practicum will be completed in the respective assisted living program by the delegating RN. Upon successful completion of these two elements, participants will sit for the proctored online exam. The employee course certificate will be portable if changing employers. With the knowledge gained from this course, health care providers will be equipped to provide essential care to their tenants, safely and with compassion and confidence.

PLEASE NOTE: Each student will have three attempts to pass the final exam with a minimum score of 80%. If a student does not pass the final exam in three attempts, the student will need to repeat the course. There will be an additional fee to retake the course.

Registrants must be at least 18 years of age to complete this course.
