LPN-IV Certification Course

Course Description

This course is designed to prepare the licensed practical nurse (LPN) to perform procedures related to the expanded scope of intravenous (IV) therapy in a licensed hospital or licensed skilled nursing facility (SNF) as identified in 655 IAC 6.5(3). Major emphasis is placed on the specialized skills needed to provide IV therapy related to the expanded scope of the LPN for clients who are 12 years old or older and weighing 80 pounds or more.

Course content includes:

• Nine online modules with a quiz after each module (average time needed to complete the online training is 30 hours)
• TWO in-person lab days at the IHCA office in West Des Moines, IA (see schedule below)
• Clinical training with your facility’s RN preceptor which is completed in your building
• A final exam that will be done via computer on the last in-person lab day in the IHCA office (a laptop computer is required to take the test)

Before starting the course the following prerequisites must be completed.

• The LPN must hold a current unrestricted Iowa license to practice as an LPN.
• The LPN must have 1040 hours of documented practice.
• Determine the RN employed by your facility who will oversee the clinical training in your building.

PLEASE NOTE:

• You are required to complete Units 1 through 5 online prior to the first in person lab day.
• You must achieve 100% on each quiz to move forward. Each quiz can be retaken as many times as necessary to achieve 100%.

Online Learning Schedule

The online course launches Sept. 28, 2026. Access details will be emailed to you upon registration. You must complete units 1-5 online before the first in-person lab day.

In-Person Lab Instructor

Heather Addy RN, BSN, CRNI, VABC, has been an active nurse since earning her degree in 2002. She has vast experience in many facets of nursing. In 2009, she discovered her love for infusion therapy and vascular access and validated her knowledge and skills by becoming certified in infusion therapy (CRNI), as well as board-certified in vascular access (VA-BC). Heather has been a vascular access specialist for more than ten years, as well as a member of the Infusion Nurses Society, the Association for Vascular Access and a former president of the Iowa Nebraska Vascular Access Network. In 2017, she began working as a mobile vascular access specialist. In addition, she shares her knowledge by creating and teaching continuing education to front-line nurses. She has done clinical education for pharmaceutical companies and community colleges and has created learning content for many health care facilities.

IHCA now offers dedicated LPN-IV Certification Course sessions for organizations with multiple LPNs seeking certification. This group-based option allows facilities to certify several LPNs at once with greater scheduling flexibility and simplified coordination of clinical training with your RN preceptors. Dedicated sessions follow the same Iowa-approved curriculum and course structure, including online modules, in-person lab days, clinical training, and final exam, while supporting a more efficient, organization-wide approach to LPN-IV certification.
